Flatiron Lunch: World’s Best Sandwich Truck Doesn’t Live Up to Name

Every Friday we go south of the ML boundaries in search of a delicious lunch. Sometimes it’s Murray Hill south or the Flatiron District, sometimes Gramercy and everything in between- but we just like to call it Flatiron Lunch.

Last week in the cold, I went to find the World’s Best Sandwich truck which a friend around the corner said I should check out. Part of me figured that if it really was the World’s Best Sandwiches (or even one of New York’s top trucks serving sandwiches), I would have heard of it already. But it was at least worth a visit.

World’s Best Sandwich has breakfast and cold cut sandwiches. And a six (6?) cheese sandwich.

There is also a menu with hot and combo sandwiches, which interested grabbed my attention.

Lastly, I noticed a special meatball parm sandwich for $5.50, which was taken down as an option just after I ordered around just before 2pm.

So I ordered the meatball parm sandwich. The meatballs seemed like super finely ground meat that was packed too tightly by a machine. They didn’t have any of that light, fluffy quality good meatballs normally have. On the plus side, they do slice them and sear each side, so that should help. But honestly, I can’t really say anything nice about the meatballs. In fact, I will go as far to say that the vegan meatballs from Terri’s organic were better.

On the other hand, the Italian sub ($5.75) was just what I was hoping for and was on par with other Italian sub (although, still not the best in the world, but I am sure you could have guessed that.) I asked them to substitute mayo for mustard, but kept the oil and vinegar. While I wouldn’t order the meatball sub again, I would get this Italian sub.

While waiting for my food, I loved checking out all the chip options. I regularly buy chips so maybe I just out of it, but it seemed they really strived for very interesting flavors and styles – lattice cut kettle cooked, hot sauce, loaded baked potato, baby back rib, dill pickle, cheddar horseradish, and cheddar bacon jalapeño. Well, I never.

I normally don’t give any credit to Yelp reviews, but I couldn’t help but agree with this statement about World’s Best Sandwich Truck: “Not Bad Deli Sandwiches At Half the Price”. It really hit the nail on the head.

THE + (What people who like this place will say)

  • Great prices.
  • Italian sub is on target.
  • Amazing chip flavors!

THE – (What people who don’t like this place will say)

  • The meatball sub isn’t worth the low price.
  • Local pizza places have better hot subs.
  • Deli cold cut sandwiches are just as good, and I don’t have to stand in the cold.
