Will Maison Kayser’s Midtown Outpost Ever Open?

We reported back in 2012 that Maison Kayser, the artisan boulangerie with an outpost on Upper East Side, would be opening a new location on 40th St. (btw 5th+6th Ave.) across from Bryant Park next to LT Burger. Back then, their signage indicated a January 2013 opening. Clearly, that didn’t happen. Now the signage says they’re due to open in Spring 2013, a time that has also passed. All this begs the question, will Maison Kayser ever open in Midtown? And perhaps more importantly, given their high prices, how much do any of you care?

  • I work near this space and pass the doors every day.

No construction work was being done inside the store until this summer.
Now, there are workers there every day.

I’m guessing you’ll see a December 2013 or January 2014 opening, but I have no info other than the current pace of work.

  • The French style pastries are definitely worth the splurge & the tumeric/walnut bread is wonderful.

  • The appetizer and entree prices are definitely insane, but I’d try a pastry. I’ve heard good things. My guess is their pastry prices can’t be too outrageous given that Le Pain Quotidien is right down the block (although they are also pricey).

  • There’s also a “Lady M” shop that just opened down the block, in the old Lily O’Brien’s space, selling cakes by the slice; pastries; eclairs; cold sandwiches; and Stumptown coffee.
ROYCE’ chocolates is also on the block.
40th Street between 5th and 6th is the new place to go for carbs.

  • They have been working on their new location near Columbus Circle as well.
