Flatiron News: Cronut Madness Visits Mad Sq Park Next Week

Here’s a bit of Flatiron Lunch news before we lay this week’s review on you…

Now here ye. Now here ye. For one day only, Tuesday, September 17th, Shake Shack in Madison Square Park will serve up a massive line of people Cronut Hole Concrete. Shake Shack’s marketing team described the special concrete as a combination of “Shake Shack’s dense, rich and creamy Butter Caramel frozen custard blended with three delectable Cinnamon Sugar Cronut Holes, and a bonus Cronut Hole on top.” Maybe I am just bitter since I still haven’t tried a cronut (hours to wait in line? Ain’t nobody got time for that. I take that back, apparently, everyone, but me has time for that), but the sound of a pastry in frozen custard seems like a recipe for soggy mess to me. There is a reason we put sturdy items like peanut butter cups and Oreos in our milkshakes. At least that cronut hole on top will probably taste delicious.

Two non-profits have been named as beneficiaries of this promotion: New York City Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association (PBA) Widows and Children’s Fund and Madison Square Park Conservancy. I think these are both great causes, although I wonder if this means the NYPD will be policing the inevitable line of people.

Now some key facts: it will sell for $4.50 and there will only be 1,000 available starting at 10:00am at the MSP Shack (opening one hour earlier than normal). Limit of two per person. From 4:00-5:00pm, Chef Dominique Ansel will be on-site, although I would put money him having to greet a disappointed crowd, because the concretes will be sold out by then.

Question: Will this be the only time in history that the B Line will be longer than regular line? I, for one, will not be participating in this madness (except maybe to take a photo of the line of people, which will hopefully trend stronger on social media than the concrete itself). Instead, I might celebrate by enjoying my favorite food hybrid, the pretzel croissant.
