Michelin Gives Love to Midtown Chinese Food

DSC04890The Michelin Guide released their star ratings of restaurants in New York yesterday. Normally this is not something we get too excited about here at Midtown Lunch because the stars are usually reserved for restaurants way out of our price range. Except this year both Lan Sheng and Café China, two restaurants that we can actually afford for lunch received one star each. This is big news – even bigger than when the nearby Szechan Gourmet received two stars from the Times. For those of you keeping score at home, that means Lan Sheng and Café China now have the same number of stars as Ai Fiori, Blue Hill (!?!), Del Posto, Grammercy Tavern, and Wd-50.

Cafe China and Evergreen on 38th both around the corner from Lan Sheng and Szechuan Gourmet are vastly superior to Lan Sheng and or Szechuan Gourmet in all areas especially hygiene, taste and quality.

While Cafe China now has a B rating its not for major reasons whereas Lan Sheng has been Grade Pending forever since it reopened after being shut down by DOH for repeated rodent issues as has Szechuan Gourmet which is now an A but had been on the news for having scored a 68 point violation in early 2012. Say whatever you want about the DOH ratings but when it says Live rats you draw your own conclusions….
