PROFILE: Midtown Lunch’er “Ericka”

Every Tuesday we turn over the site to a different Midtown Lunch’er for his or her recommendations for the best lunch in Midtown. This week it’s Ericka, an Executive Assistant who hasn’t found a plate of halal food that she loves!?

Name: Ericka

Age: 37

Occupation: Executive Assistant

Where in Midtown do you work? 50th & 3rd (S&W smell always sways me to want a juicy steak)

Favorite Kind of Food: Thai (Little Thai Kitchen), Vietnamese (OBAO, any other recommendations?), a good empanada and a good lightly fried soft shell crab has been dear and near to me lately (Cer Te, Tenzan Spider Roll), Dumplings Soup (Mee Fun), Ess a Bagel (at least one every morning), looking for soup dumplings around here.

Least Favorite Kind of Food: Anything that’s bad :-(, it’s such a bummer when you go out to lunch after reading a delectable review or seeing a great pic and spending your whole lunch hour for something that was not worth the time, effort or hard earned money on. On that note, salad bars are dead ends, I’m sorry to the many fans, but I’ve yet to encounter a good “street meat” halal place, Taco Bell, ugh

Favorite Place(s) to Eat Lunch in Midtown: Little Thai Kitchen never fails, Sophie’s for the empanadas closest to what I grew up with, the Kati Roll guys on 46th & Park

“Go-To” Lunch Place You and Your Coworkers Eat at Too Often? Silo, Pampano, Wild Ginger

Places you have discovered thanks to Midtown Lunch? Cer Te, Korilla, Waffle & Dinges truck (every Friday!!!), Uncle Gussy

If you could work anywhere (just because of the lunch) where would it be and why? Thailand, Vietnam…incredible, immediate street food!…but alas my heart is here in Midtown

Anything you’d like to ask the midtown lunch readers? As previously mentioned, keep the comments and suggestions rolling, they inspire many of us city dwellers who superficially have to succumb to working in cubicles until that wonderful time in the middle of the day comes where only the true lover of various cuisines available at such a close proximity for under $10 can await. Because of Midtownlunch I have
ventured off the beaten path (no further than USQ) to satisfy my quest for that filling yet cheap lunch (Chef Samir’s truck, Nio’s Trinidad Roti truck)…any good pizza beside Apertivo? And who’s checked out the food exhibit at the Library yet? I want to go!

Got an answer for Ericka? Put it in the comments. Want to be next week’s Profiled: Midtown Lunch’er (or know somebody you’d like to nominate)? Email editor@midtownlunch.com.

  • John’s Shanghai (on 46th btw 6th and 7th) has decent soup dumplings. Not quite as good as the dumplings you can find in Chinatown or Flushing, but I’ve also always had them delivered so they might just be a little cold. There’s also Joe’s Shanghai in Midtown and Evergreen, but I’ve found John’s Shanghai to have more flavorful dumplings and better prices.

  • Re: Street Meat – Have you tried the more popular ones such as The Halal Guys (53rd & 6th / 52 & 6th), The Imposter Cart, XPL, or my fav – Trini Paki Boys (tho they are not technically Halal)? There’s also Kwik Meal and Biryani Cart, but I’m not a big fan of theirs. Only Biryani’s Kati Rolls.

  • The Biryani Cart (annex) Chiken Tikka Pita, at $4, is the best lunch deal in the City.

  • Would Naples 45 (brick oven pizza at Grand Central) or Little Italy on 45th (basic pie and slice joint) be too far out of range for you?

  • seems like you’re willing to travel outside of them ml boundaries for lunch, so i suggest checking out the halal cart at 69th and york, it’s right on par with the 53rd and 6th halal guy in my opinion. for pizza check out primavera at 53rd and 2nd.

  • thanks guys…yes, I’m willing to venture, but not everyday, the chain and shackle impeded that…will def check out Little Italy which is close, I’ve not had great experiences w Evergreen, but will try John’s Shanghai soon!!..have a good one :-)

For pizza (and chicken parm/eggplant parm), try La Belleza on 49th between 3rd and Lexington.
