Mexico Blvd Truck Serves Up Tasty Tortas

Back in January, we announced the arrival of the Mexico Blvd truck to the crowded streets of Midtown. However, we hadn’t gotten around to a full review until now. When I saw that it was parked in my neighborhood last week, I decided it was time to see what kind of food this place has to offer.

The menu consists of tacos and tortas with your choice of adobo pork (“pork marinated for 24 hours in our great grandmother’s adobo”), pastor (“pork tenderloin marinated in our three chiles sauce, served with cilantro, onion, and a pineapple slice”), bistec (“top round steak in a drunken sauce, served with cilantro and onion”), and tinga (“shredded chicken in a tomato and chipotle sauce”). They also offer fresh guacamole, which is definitely on my radar for next time. After careful deliberation, I setted on the Pastor Torta ($8).

The sandwich was a very hefty size and consisted of the pastor marinated pork, guacamole, pineapple slices, lettuce, tomato, jalapenos, onion, and sour cream on fluffy fresh bread.

On first glance, I thought this sandwich was gorgeously colorful, although it looked like it was going to be too bready. But the bread was so soft and fresh-tasting that I immediately forgot this as soon as I bit into it. This thing is MESSY, to the point of being comical. Get some extra napkins, maybe cover your desk with a tarp, and go at it. The pastor pork is tender, a little spicy, and super flavorful. The pineapple was amazing…my only complaint was that it wasn’t cooked with the pork and thus lacked some of the caramelized juiciness you get with a typical al pastor. But this is a minor complaint since, hey, pineapple! All of the flavors in this sandwich came together wonderfully for a deliciously filling Mexican lunch.

Sadly they’re in the Financial District today, but they will hopefully be back in Midtown on Friday. You can follow them on twitter or on the ML Twitter Tracker for exact locations.

The + (what someone who likes this place would say)

  • Tortas and tacos, tortas and tacos. Can’t get enough.
  • I love pineapple on my sandwiches!
  • Fresh guac every day from a truck? Awesomeness.

The – (what someone who doesn’t like this place would say)

  • El Rey de Sabor is my King of Flavor, and no new fancy truck is going to change that.
  • I can’t eat this at my desk and work at the same time, too much mess!
  • Just tacos and tortas? Where are the burritos, quesadillas, enchiladas, tostadas, huaraches, etc?

  • is this white people mexican? that truck looks gimmicky.

  • The food looks and sounds pretty solidly Mexican-Mexican, though if you’re catering to the Financial District and Midtown, your clientele is going to be overwhelmingly white.

$8 for a torta that can be had, at least the same size (though no pineapple slice) at the Tacos y Quesadillas truck for $6, on the other hand…

I <3 the tortas from Tacos y Quesadillas. I like to head there at night when the woman is there, because I prefer the way she makes my sandwiches. She puts the pineapple slice on my cemita which is like $6.50 I think?

I ate at Mexico Blvd on Monday and it was a treat! The staff are all very friendly. I had a pastor taco and a bistec both with cheese I go over to Mexico city quite a bit and these tacos really resembled the authentic flavors. My colleague ordered a Chico guacamole & chips and it was freshly delicious. Glad to have this truck around!

Um, I disagree. The “fluffy” bread was bland and may well have been a leftover roll from egg/cheese breakfast. The torta was not worth making a return visit.

  • I went there a few days ago. I asked the guy behind the glass what I should get between the “Adobo” and “Pastor” torta. He recommended the “Adobo.”

The Adobo wasn’t bad. The ingredients were all fresh. They claim that the pork is marinated for 24 hours. I’m didn’t detect the taste and ternderness from meat that is marinated that long. The sandwich was filling which was nice.

I got the chips and guac with with for $3.25. It was a ripoff. There wasn’t nearly $3.25 worth of chips or guac there. There was a small container of guac with a few glorified doritos. The seasoning on the chips overwhelmed the flavor of the guac. It was a disappointment which I recommend avoiding unless you LOVE guac. The guac itself isn’t bad.

Overall, I think this place needs a little more flavor, but the sandwiches are fresh and filling.
