Mexico Blvd Truck Serves Up Tasty Tortas
Back in January, we announced the arrival of the Mexico Blvd truck to the crowded streets of Midtown. However, we hadn’t gotten around to a full review until now. When I saw that it was parked in my neighborhood last week, I decided it was time to see what kind of food this place has to offer.
The menu consists of tacos and tortas with your choice of adobo pork (“pork marinated for 24 hours in our great grandmother’s adobo”), pastor (“pork tenderloin marinated in our three chiles sauce, served with cilantro, onion, and a pineapple slice”), bistec (“top round steak in a drunken sauce, served with cilantro and onion”), and tinga (“shredded chicken in a tomato and chipotle sauce”). They also offer fresh guacamole, which is definitely on my radar for next time. After careful deliberation, I setted on the Pastor Torta ($8).
The sandwich was a very hefty size and consisted of the pastor marinated pork, guacamole, pineapple slices, lettuce, tomato, jalapenos, onion, and sour cream on fluffy fresh bread.
On first glance, I thought this sandwich was gorgeously colorful, although it looked like it was going to be too bready. But the bread was so soft and fresh-tasting that I immediately forgot this as soon as I bit into it. This thing is MESSY, to the point of being comical. Get some extra napkins, maybe cover your desk with a tarp, and go at it. The pastor pork is tender, a little spicy, and super flavorful. The pineapple was amazing…my only complaint was that it wasn’t cooked with the pork and thus lacked some of the caramelized juiciness you get with a typical al pastor. But this is a minor complaint since, hey, pineapple! All of the flavors in this sandwich came together wonderfully for a deliciously filling Mexican lunch.
Sadly they’re in the Financial District today, but they will hopefully be back in Midtown on Friday. You can follow them on twitter or on the ML Twitter Tracker for exact locations.
The + (what someone who likes this place would say)
- Tortas and tacos, tortas and tacos. Can’t get enough.
- I love pineapple on my sandwiches!
- Fresh guac every day from a truck? Awesomeness.
The – (what someone who doesn’t like this place would say)
- El Rey de Sabor is my King of Flavor, and no new fancy truck is going to change that.
- I can’t eat this at my desk and work at the same time, too much mess!
- Just tacos and tortas? Where are the burritos, quesadillas, enchiladas, tostadas, huaraches, etc?
