PROFILE: Midtown Lunch’er “David”

Every Tuesday we turn over the site to a different Midtown Lunch’er for his or her recommendations for the best lunch in Midtown. This week we’re proud to welcome the youngest profiled luncher ever: David Pines, author of the book Pines Picks: A Kid’s Guide to the Best Things to Eat and Drink in New York City. He’s 12, so let’s see if we can be on our best behavior today in the comments. (I know it’s tough for all of you.)

Name: David

Age: 12

Occupation: Student and Author of Pines Picks: A Kid’s Guide to the Best
Things to Eat and Drink in New York City

Favorite Kind of Food: Pizza, Buffalo Wings and Nachos

Least Favorite Kind of Food: Raisins

Favorite Place(s) to Eat Lunch in Midtown: Atomic Wings (Hot Buffalo Wings), Daisy May’s (Ribs/Sweet and Sticky), Popeyes (Fried Chicken), The Melt Shop (Grilled Cheese), Burger Joint (Burgers), Azuri Cafe (Falafel), Lucky’s Famous Burgers (Onion Rings), Two Boots (Pizza/Bayou Beast), Ranch1 (Grilled Chicken Sandwich), Wafels and Dinges (Best waffles ever!), Ray Bari (pizza).

Place you discovered thanks to Midtown Lunch? Daisy May’s BBQ Cart (50th between 6th and 7th). It’s great because it is so much easier to get to than having to go all the way to 11th Avenue!

If you could work anywhere (just because of the lunch) where would it be and why? To me, there is no better place to eat than in New York City.

Anything you’d like to ask the Midtown Lunch readers? What do you think the best pizza is in midtown? My favorite for a regular New York slice is Ray Bari on Third Ave. between 55th and 56th Streets.

Got an answer for David? Put it in the comments. And, as always, if you want to be next week’s Profiled: Midtown Lunch’er (or know somebody you’d like to nominate)? Email editor@midtownlunch.com.

  • FREAK OF THE WEEK

  • Obviously an attempt to stave off the vitriol for a week. Well played, Zach.

  • I don’t think my namesake has been to Midtown in a while.

That said, you’re a brave kid, David. I look forward to a Happy Hour post in the near future, to stave off the vitriol there, too.

  • Best by-the-slice pizza in Midtown is either branch of Mariella’s (one is on 57th & 8th, the other on 60th b/t Lex & Third).

  • There used to be a mariellas on 3rd between 16 and 17 i think. not sure if it is still there. I did enjoy their pizza.

I hate to say it, but I had artichoke basil’s on 14th between 1st and 2nd a couple of weeks back, just a plain slice, and, while I’d had it before when they opened and was not impressed, this time, I was kind of blown away by how good it was. I daresay that is the best slice I’ve had in Manhattan in quite some time. At 4 bucks, it better be.

  • Oh yeah, and David, if you want to show to a HH, I will buy you a beer. But you can’t tell anyone where you got it from. heh I am all for the corruption of 12 yr olds!

I love this kid! and I love that he listed Popeye’s as one of his favorites. Great minds think – and eat – alike, young David. To answer your question, I would have answered Two Boots, but I just went to the 9th Ave location a couple of days ago and it seemed like the quality had gone way down for some reason. The grandma slice was inedible. and even the standard slice wasn’t as good as I remember. It’s a bit out of bounds, but Justino’s on 10th ave is the best in midtown. it’s right above 57th street, so I’d still call that midtown. or midtown adjacent.

    • Agreed, anyone who touts Popeyes’ fried chicken as a favorite is okay in my book.

As for midtown slice, Little Italy Pizza on 43rd street between 5th and Madison.

  • I will not make the obligatory South Park raisins reference. I prefer Pizza Suprema down on 8th and 30th. Not quite midtown, but I walk there from 42nd when I feel like paying $3 for pizza.

    • I’ll second Pizza Suprema, especially since it’s much better than necessary, considering it’s too-close-to-Penn location. I like the Upside Down slice.

  • Hate to be the one to break the news, but Daisy May’s cart has been m MIA for a while.

Oh, and I thought you were great as the young Willy Wonka

    • A year, in fact — part of why I mentioned he mustn’t have been around for a while.

I just don’t bother with pizza around here. I’d probably just get a couple slices at Pronto on 48th if someone insisted I eat pizza.

Try the vodka slice at Bella Napoli on 49th St. between 6th and 7th.

I think Zach might be trying to punk us.

And if you’re on here trying to sell your book, aren’t you supposed to offer up a free copy?

  • How cute!

HEY! He is not a blogger! A freak of the week who is not a blogger! Amazing!

  • Eat on, little dude.
