Sami Dosa Cart Makes a Great Masala Uthappam

Sami Dosa

It’s been awhile since we dropped in on Sami’s Dosa Cart, which in my opinion is one of the best still semi under the radar cart options in midtown, so I was happy to see it getting some serious love in the forums. The dosas are a natural pick, but the Masala Uthappam also makes for a great lunch.

Masala Uttapam

As lunch’r veggiefoodie put it:

Try the Masala Uttapam. It’s made from the same batter as the Dosa. It’s like a pancake rather then a crepe. The Dosa potato filling which is inside the Dosa is cooked on top. If you like spicy, ask him to add the dry chili powder on it. And if your really brave ask him to add green chilies!!!

I’ve had the Onion Chili Uthappam before and it was terrific, sort of like an Indian spiced onion ring pancake. With an ample amount of potato cooked into the “pancake” the Masala Uthappam was more substantial and filling than the Onion Chili Uthappam. A couple things to note. The uthappam comes with sambar and coconut chutney. It takes longer than the dosa to cook, so budget your time accordingly. And the price has gone up to $6, from my first post back in January. For the quality and the amount of food I still think that $6 is totally worth it.
