Salt & Pepper Reopens With a Bigger & Brighter Space

Salt & Pepper
Back in February we brought you the news that Salt & Pepper (33rd btw. 6+7th) had taken the Old Hickey’s space and closed for renovations. It was truly sad news for me because I loved going to Salt & Pepper for their big platters of cheap food. I patiently waited for them to reopen, and finally after nearly 3 months of being closed, their doors opened to the hungry midtown lunch crowd once again. Take a look at the brand spanking new space after the jump.

Salt & Pepper

If any of you remember what the old Salt & Pepper space looked like then you’ll be truly surprised by the extreme transformation. The new place was HUGE! Plenty of seats for the lunch crowd. And no more poorly dim fluorescent lighting but bright natural light from the giant glass windows.

As for the food and the menu, they looked pretty much what they were before the renovations, which to me is good thing.

If you’re standing in the back and facing the door, to your right is where you order your burgers, breakfast items and Latin food.

On the left side is where you get your Indian food (that counter used to be in the back).

And next to the Indian food counter there is an empty counter space that the cashier told me will eventually have pizza.

Even though I am glad they’re finally opened, I’m not so enthusiastic about their decision to serve pizza. There are so many delis in that area that serve pizza, why not do something different? Anyways I wish them luck with the new space and I will return soon for the stewed chicken with lentils and rice.

Disappointment. Maybe it was too soon after opening, but the goat stew, chicken cordon bleu, and chicken tikka masala all missed. Each dish was overcooked, dry and at room temperature. The basmati rice was overcooked, mushy and too bland. The spinach was the only tasty part of my meal and that’s what there was the least of. Before I had gotten back from the 3 block walk to my office the masala sauce had already coagulated and I expect there to be a hotness to the spice which barely registered.
For Indian I’m sticking w/ Touch of India, much better value, better tasting and fresher.
The other dishes can also be found in better quality elsewhere. Maybe in a few months I’ll give the stewed chicken and lentils a try.

Sucky food, sucky ambience and being owned by a pakistani you would assume the meat they use is halal but sadly enough it is not. in short, save your money and dont eat there.
