Whiskey Rebel: Because Rebels Like to Go Out of Bounds

If you like to eat, chances are you like to drink (read: a lot of you are freakin’ lushes), so every week our Happy Hour Correspondent “Mamacita” will post about a different bar in Midtown that fits the Midtown Lunch mentality: unhealthy food, not lame (unless it’s lame in a cool way), and most importantly… cheap.

Whiskey Rebel is part of a family of bars that includes Snafu and Whiskey Trader. Like its siblings, Rebel offers a comfortable space to grab a drink. If the unlimited popcorn is not enough for you, there are no problems with bringing in some Vindaloo from the Curry Hill area to supplement your night. Alluring bartenders draw you in, but it’s the happy hour specials that keep you warm through the night. This area of town doesn’t get enough attention on the JOB (Just Out of Bounds) drink deals so here is a look inside!

Whiskey Rebel is not a dive, nor does it try to be. As you enter the Deco-style mural catches your eye and to your right the rich mahogany bar beckons you. Bartenders aim to be accommodating and welcoming to the local work set that fills the joint on weekdays and the warm, mood lighting makes this a good spot to have a drink with a date.

Happy hour is all night with $5 Stoli mixed drinks, cosmos, and shots of Patron, Jameson, and Jager. The draft selection is decent with some of my favorites: Blue Moon and Brooklyn Lager.

Like most bars there are multiple TV screens to catch the games -if you are so inclined. The Rebel also hosts a Monday trivia night every week for the nerd in all of us.

The Plus + (What someone who does like this place would say)

  • All day drink specials
  • Free popcorn
  • Dim lighting means your date looks even hotter after that Stoli on the rocks
  • A good group happy hour choice and just around the corner from some fragrant curry goodness

The Minus – (What someone who doesn’t like this place would say)

  • Too out of the way
  • Whiskey Rebel is part of a string of sister bars that all pretty much feel the same
  • I like dive bars. I don’t want a hot chick serving me, I want an old saggy man like at Hollands!

Whiskey Rebel, 129 Lexington Ave. (btw. 28th/29th St.,) 212-686-3800
