Charley’s Grilled Subs Moves Up (To Street Level)

Last week Lunch’er Mike tipped us off about Charley’s, a new cheesesteak place opening up on 33rd btw. 6+7th (right near the Little Italy Pizza, the place that Clay reported about this past winter.) Before you get excited though, I went over to the place on Friday and sadly it turns out to be some terrible looking chain that’s actually been around for awhile- downstairs in Penn Station. Unsurprisingly the reviews on Yelp are not very encouraging. (Not that we trust Yelp… but 1 1/2 stars is about as bad as it gets.)  Has anybody actually eaten at this place?

I’ve been to the under-Penn-Station branch; the word is unexceptional. They’re not actively horrible, just nothing worth going out of your way for.

Charley’s used to be one of my favorite places for cheesesteaks down in Atlanta. In NY, I’ve only been to Charley’s once, when it was downstairs in the Mall of Manhattan, but since it’s a chain, I’m assuming this one will be fairly similar.

As for the cheesesteak itself, the bread they use is a little bit crusty on the outside, soft yet chewy on the inside, and fairly strong enough to absorb all the juices that come out of the meat and hold together. IMO, that’s one of the best parts of a cheesesteak – the bite at the bottom where you just have meat, juice and bread (maybe that’s why I love Chicago-style Italian beef sandwiches so much). I usually get it with onions, provolone and… mayo. Here, I feel like the mayo ties it together because without it, the meat and cheese could use a little more salt. Overall, I think it’s a pretty good sandwich, though for those of you who hate mayo, you’ll have to judge for yourself.

  • gourmet fries? wtf are they?…duckfat?….or has mario batali sunk even lower?

Wayyyy better than Quiznos or Subway as far as sandwich chains go.
