Against Our Better Judgement, I Try Pizza By Cer Te’s “Salad Pizza”

New! Salad Pizzas from Pizza by Cer Te

Last Thursday, we mentioned Pizza by Cer Te just added “salad pizza” to their menu. Out of curiosity, I wandered over the next day to check out these freaks of nature healthy pizza alternatives. After all, Blondie had given their regular slices two thumbs way way up, so maybe – just maybe – their salad pizzas wouldn’t be as silly as they sound. Still, try as I might, I never understood why someone would consider a pizza place for low-fat options. For veggie-topped pizza, yes (maybe…) I can understand, but Pizza By Cer Te‘s new salad pizzas are pretty confusing. It’s salad…on a pizza. Can you really call it pizza when there’s no tomato sauce and no cheese at all? I try these abominations after the jump…Roman Salad "Salad Pizza" from Pizza by Cer Te

I ordered two of these 8” herb crusted salad pizzas – Classic Caesar and Roman Salad. The Roman Salad is pictured here. I was pretty impressed by the fact that each pizza crust is made-to-order before they toss on a mix of greens. The Roman Salad has tomato, red onion, tiny balls of mozzarella, arugula, romaine, and basil. The greens were fresh and crunchy – really satisfying if you’re looking for side salad performance. I even liked the tomato seed vinaigrette, which the guy behind the counter highly suggested. But was the tangy salad dressing enough to redeem the fact that I just paid $7.95 + tax for salad on a pizza crust? Hmm…maybe, if it was $6.95. Then again, salads are pretty pricey in these parts. Still, bummer.

Aside from the tender chicken pieces and thin cheese cracker-like croutons, which were flavorful and added texture, the Classic Caesar was pretty standard. Like I said, if you’re really craving pizza and can somehow trick yourself into eating a salad with pizza crust instead, then you are in for a treat. Otherwise, the salad pizza is hard to justify. Also, to add insult to injury, it’s impossible to cut with the environmentally-friendly biodegradable fork and knife that Pizza by Cer Te supplies. So you’ll have to eat your salad pizza like a gyro. But then it’s a gyro made with pizza crust.
