Rare Bar & Grill Called Best Burger in Midtown East
The blog Law & Food took it upon themselves to try every burger in Midtown East recently and came to these tough to argue with (?) conclusions: Black Shack (on Lex btw. 37+38th) is meh, Sarge’s (on 3rd btw. 36+37th) is better for deli food, Five Guys (on 3rd btw. 43+44th) does its job but isn’t as good as Blarney Stone (on 3rd btw. 45+46th). And the winner is… Rare Bar & Grill (on 38th and Lex), even though admittedly it’s a splurge, and Blarney would be their choice for a day to day burger. Noticeably absent is the burger at P.J. Clarke’s (on 55th and 3rd), but according to AHT (our Mayor of all things hamburger) it’s not that good anymore.

Thanks for the post Zach! I will say I haven’t tried PJ Clarke’s in quite a while (way before they reformulated it) so that is a noticeable absence. I also skipped Goodburger and Juniors, which tasted a lot like the Sarge burger, although even weaker.
Like I said, Rare was very good, but not in any way an everyday burger. I think my post proved what I feared: Midtown East is not very good for burgers.
If I eat a burger elsewhere around town, I go for JG Melon’s or wait until Monday’s at RUB>

5 guys is overrated. Blarney Stone *is* > 5 Guys (having tried both…)

I think it’s a better value. The service at that Five Guys sucks. Screwing up my order at that location is part of their protocol. Blarney’s may not be as high quality, but they get it right. That’s why I usually walk past Five Guys and straight to Blarney’s.

The 5 guys on 3rd is one of the weaker of their chains. Also, keep in mind, that I didn’t actually say I preferred Blarney Stone, but it is a “better” value on the whole than 5 guys. When I want to be a fat bastard though, 5 guys is usually my first choice.

Totally with Steve on this one. I call Bullcrap. Rare is absolutely overpriced. Quality and flavor are seriously lacking. Oh, and fries are extra.

No offense, but why would you compare a $15-$20 burger at Rare with a $6 burger from Black Shack
or 5 Guys? I just went to Black Shack and tried their new Steakhouse Burger… you must try it, it’s awesome!!!!
