PROFILE: Midtown Lunch’er “Anthony”

Every Tuesday I turn over the site to a different Midtown Lunch’er for his or her recommendations for the best lunch in Midtown. This week it’s Anthony, a consultant who loves mole and is willing to trade info about small hidden restaurants that nobody knows about…

Name: Anthony

Age: 25

Occupation: Consulting (I make confused people less confused)

Where in Midtown do you Work?: By Carnegie Deli

Favorite Kind of Food: Everything! My tops are ocean critters.. I once had some freshly caught octopus off the coast of Spain, the quality brought tears to my eyes. Anything with heat, the hotter the better. I always had a thing for Mexican, and the non-fish Japanese sub-cuisines (of course I like Sushi). Oh, and cheese and mustard and French Macarons.

Least Favorite Kind of Food: Food made without love…tacky diner food, bland Latin food, red meat cooked more than medium-rare, overcooked fish, and last: Take-Out Chinese.

Favorite Place(s) to Eat Lunch in Midtown: Men Kui Tei (on 56th btw. 5+6th) for Ramen, Sapporo (on 49th btw. 6+7th) for the Tonkatusu, Pret for the occasional sandwich, H&H for soup, Daisy May’s (on 50th btw. 6+7th) for the Brisket chili, I think I want a burger from Burger Joint (on 56th btw. 6+7th) today… Tehuitzingo (on 10th Ave. btw. 47+48th) for tacos (the closest to Mexico in Manhattan as far as I’m concerned), Tina’s (on 56th btw. 5+6th) Cuban sandwich, and the Halal Guys on 6th/53rd for street meat.

“Go-To” Lunch Place You and Your Coworkers Eat at Too Often? Crown deli (on B’way btw. 52+53rd)… It’s close and the buffet can be very good on occasion, oh and Pret too…

Place(s) you discovered thanks to Midtown Lunch? Momofuku Midtown on 56th btw. 5+6th), Sapporo, Biryani cart (on 46th and 6th), Carnegie John cart (on 56th and 7th), Cer te (on 55th btw. 5+6th), and Go Go Curry (on 38th btw. 7+8th) to name a few.

If you could work anywhere (just because of the lunch) where would it be and why? Near the Tsukiji Fish market in Tokyo

Is there anything you’d like to ask the Midtown Lunch readers? Every now and again you find that small little special restaurant you never heard of. It has fantastic amazing food you can’t get enough of, and a fiercely loyal following of locals who like to keep it secret. I shared my favorite taco place above, now what is your little special place?

Got a recommendation for Anthony? Feel free to put it in the comments. And as always, if you would like to be next week’s Profiled: Midtown Lunch’er (or know somebody you’d like to nominate), email zach@midtownlunch.com.

  • If you haven’t already, go next door to Tulcingo del Valle and try their moles.

  • Is it really “sharing” when he’s talking about a place that has been mentioned on this site many times, going back for 3 years?

  • Whoo isss youuu?

  • Wow Susan. How do you really feel? ;-)

  • FREAK OF THE WEEK

  • You seem like a nice boy, Anthony, but I’m not showing you my little special place.

I agree with Mama and actually prefer Tulcingo del Valle, but Tehuitzingo is okay.

So what happens on Friday when ML recaps other food blogs? Will a mirror-to-mirror endless loop ensue?

My special place is neither little nor secret.

My fave place when I worked around there is Between the Bread (or Adult food as we called it). it’s just a take out counter from a catering firm but the food was DELICIOUS! 55th between 6th and 7th

  • for sushi, and definitely not in ML price range – inase. i never need reservations, the waitress recognized me the 2nd time, and the fish is really good. never before in my life have i seen such a great selection of fish on the sushi/sashimi combo. fresh botan ebi & chu toro on a $35 combo platter? abalone that’s still breathing? doesnt get any better than that, at least in nyc.

  • “My special place is neither little nor secret”

    That’s not what Blondie said.

I didn’t see this one on AvoiditNYC.com, so that’s always good!

  • You have an excellent selection of restaurants!
    Way to go Anthony

Thanks Mamacita, i forgot about Tulcingo del Valle, agreed the Mole is very authentic, they are the same owners as the deli, and are all from Puebla. I also love the seafood cocktails at Tulcingo, reminds me of all the Mexican restaurants in Chicago.

  • you hate take out chinese? I just cried a little!

im with you on bland latin food- blech!

Sorry Susan you felt the need to search a restaurant you never heard of before, true it is on here back in 2007, but according to your profile you’ve only been a member for 8 months. Go have a taco and STFU.

    Sensitive much?

Had you used that elongated head of yours you would have realized that, other than Zach, no ones profile here pre-dates the end of April ’09 when a profile became a prerequisite for entering comments.

Thank your stars you weren’t profiled before ML became watered down with syncophants, sinophiles and simpletons.

So Zach, now that you’ve done Bert when can we expect Ernie?

  • Alright… let’s keep the telling people to the shut the fuck up to a minimum.

  • @Bossman – thanks. You’re right – a year ago he would have been slammed by the comments.

@amalizzio – No need for me to search. I’ve been reading this blog since 2006. The restaurant is out of bounds for Midtown Lunch as set by Zach (not that I would expect you to actually know that). Not that it matters either way, but I have eaten there.

@Zach – so, this is what the profiled lunchers have come to? Maybe your crack staff should vet the profiles to make sure when they say things like how they have a “secret restaurant” it’s one that hasn’t been mentioned numerous times before.

  • In his defense he didn’t really call it secret… he implied that it was his “special” place. Give the guys a break (especially those of you who haven’t been profiled! You know who you are…)

  • @amalizzo–your profile says you’ve been here for only ^seven^ months. Interesting.

Bossman has the real info on profiles above. I’ve been frequenting this site and commenting within the first few months of its inception. Profiles are relatively new.

And susan is 1100% correct: Tehuitzingo is well familiar to any long-time reader of this site. I learned of this place here long ago and recall it being mentioned many times–without ‘searching’ (like, whenever the topic of ‘authentic Mexican’ comes up!). More of a reiterating than a sharing.
