Utsav Has Their Own Takeaway Biriyani

It’s been forever since I’ve been to Utsav, the fancy all you can eat Indian buffet on 46th Street btw. 6+7th. So when I was told by a friend over at Epicurious that they were now serving Biriyani for take out, I was pretty excited!  I’ve never tried their buffet (it’s too expensive!) but their take out food, which is available daily just inside the front door, is good (especially for those of you who prefer spending a little extra on slightly fancier Indian food.)

The guy behind the bar at Utsav told me that they’ve always had biriyani to go (and that might be true… like I said, it’s been awhile.)  But either way, it was the first time for me.  $8 gets you a decent amount of biriyani (the tray is deeper than it seems) and it had a ton of chicken.  Nice flavor, good kick, and definitely a bit more refined than the version at the Biriyani Cart (which is a couple hundred feet away on 46th and 6th).  For the price, I’ll probably still stick with the Biriyani Cart (I’m a cheap bastard, and you know I love ’em!), but if you’re looking for something a bit more authentic, less greasy, and more refined, Utsav’s biriyani would make a great addition to yoru lunchtime rotation.

  • I’ve never been there for the buffet, but I highly recommend going there for pre-theater meals. One of the few Indian restaurants where food is a little pricier, but service doesn’t get sacrificed

  • It’s between 6th and 7th ~and~ between 46th and 47th?

  • @pigiron – Yes, it really is.

  • Yup, it’s the ground level of one of those buildings that have a walk way in the middle of the block.

It’s directly behind 1185 Avenue of the Americas

  • is this deal available only for lunch or for dinner too? i live about 1 min away from there

  • There’s a walkway between 46th and 47th, go down 46th from 6th ave and you’ll see it on the right, across from the biryani cart.

I was there recently and there was a small line that was moving way too slow, walked out, too bad, smelled good.

  • That’s only 4 different ways to describe the location. Surely we can do better than that.

  • I’ve had the Utsav buffet before. It’s okay. Not really like wow that’s totally worth the 25 bucks. It’s still a buffet! Food was decent but not damn I’m addicted now…
