Downtown Lunch: Guactastic Burritos From Gloria’s Pushcart

Midtown workers shouldn’t have all the fun, so to even the score, I’ve brought on Daniel Krieger as an official Downtown Lunch Correspondent to write up some of the tasty stuff you can get in the lower half of Manhattan. He’s a great photographer (ensuring good food porn), but more importantly he is a lover of cheap, unique and delicious eats (or as I like to call it- Midtown Lunch’ish food.) PLUS there’s a bonus cartoon at the bottom (for those who’d rather watch a review than read it.)

Downtown Lunch: Gloria's

After reading about the Ravioli Faire cart in the ML Forums I went to check out their chicken parm, but was rather disappointed. I also tasted the meatball which was better, but still not worth posting about (IMHO). It wasn’t a complete waste though. That day I discovered Gloria’s pushcart, a Mexican vendor specializing in burritos, just 15 feet away.

For $6 you can get the Jumbo Burrito which comes with three fillings. I got chicken, rice, and guacamole because well 1) I love guacamole and 2) they had a huge ass sign

Guacamole is probably my favorite condiment on the planet. I’d bathe in it if the garlic didn’t make me stink so bad.

Anyway the burrito was a nice solid sized lunch vessel for $6, but I need some tortilla chips when I have a burrito (it’s just standard procedure.) Unfortunately, you can’t get chips at Gloria’s unless you order the nachos (which come topped with all the extras for $5.50).

This I didn’t understand so I asked about it:

Me – “I really can’t get just a small brown paper bag with some chips?”
Gloria* – “No”
Me – “What if I give you like 3 bucks?”
Gloria – “No only the nachos”
Me – “Has anyone else ever asked for just some nacho chips on the side?”
Gloria – “No”

(*I don’t really know if the woman I was speaking to was named Gloria.)

They have rice and bean plates for $6.50 as well, but for a quick easy lunch I suggest Gloria’s pushcart for a good solid reasonably priced burrito. Just bring your own chips.

And now… for the review in cartoon form!

Haha… I know I shouldn’t find this as funny as I do. But I am having a bad day and this really amused me.

  9. Nice Yvo.. those nachos look pretty good I guess I have to try them next time.

  10. Shake it Daniel. I love the way you say “guacamol” over and over again as if the e is silent.

  11. Nice post YVO! Though from all those pics on your site I think I’ll still go with the burrito. do they do carne asada? Are they pinto beans?

  12. Cartoon was hilarious!

  13. I’m loving the cartoon, and I apologize for drumming up so much interest in the Ravioli Faire cart. I accept that I have led people astray with my fascination of it… I agree, it totally sucks these days!

  14. Daniel… your cartoon self sure is having a rough time pinching out that loaf

Take some cartoon Ex-lax next time

  15. They mentioned this on eater.com

Reviewbots —While it’s cute for now, we’re pretty terrified that all the food bloggers are going to start turning their food reviews into animated movies on xtra normal. Before the novelty wears off, check out Daniel Krieger’s excellent review on Midtown Lunch and The Feedbag’s CGI Black Label Mystery post. [ML; TFB]

  16. Daniel–

Can you post the link to the animation program? I want to make movies! I only have careerbuilder’s monkemail bookmarked…

  17. Mamacita – they only do ground beef & chicken, and they have black beans or refried beans :)

  18. Cant wait to make my first cartoon! It’s a love story about a one legged crack addict with tourettes who finds herself in love with a blind mule with an eating disorder.

I work a block away and ate here twice. This cart was TERRIBLE. Maybe it was just a bad week, because there is NOTHING NOTHING NOTHING near here and I was desperate for the cart to be good, but the first day it wasn’t good and the second day I got sick.

  20. there’s no way this cart is TERRIBLE.. I mean it’s not the best burrito you’re ever going to have but it was pretty nice and I mean come on..they have GUACAMOLE!

  21. Haha. Weird cartoon with the robotic voice but it’s cool.

Also like how Daniel asked for chips and go no leeway. Wow, not even for 3 bucks…only for nachos. Haha.

  22. love it! please make the cartoon a regular feature!
