VendrTV Visits the 53rd St. & 6th Ave. Halal Guys

VendrTV, the new video podcast dedicated to uncovering the best street food in the world, has devoted their third episode to the famous chicken and lamb over rice guys on 53rd St. and 6th Ave. in Midtown. The episode is hosted by Daniel Delaney (with a little help from yours truly) and he visits the famous nighttime cart on the SW corner, their daytime sister cart which parks on the SE corner, and the imposter cart that parks on the SW corner during the day. The episode brings to life a series of posts from Midtown Lunch, and is vaguely reminiscent of that “report” on WCBS TV last November– except that it’s good.

I hesitate to post the video, which exposes me in all my dorkiness and perhaps shows me looking not quite as fat as you may think I am.  Just know this for the purposes of scale… I only look that way because the host of the show is 7’1″ and weighs 530 pounds. (Lord help me, I’m just not that attractive…)

  • that host dude looks like the real life version of Syndrome from The Incredibles.

  • Looks like an episode of “Help me Howard” and Zach is trying to get the imposter chicken and rice cart kicked off the nyc street vendor game. LOL

  • I am very disappointed Zach! You aren’t even as “fat” as “famous fat dave,” who does those food tours in his cab, whom I consider merely “chubby!” BOOOOOO!!!!! I think all the walking is to blame! Yes, I am saying it now, for a “fat guy,” you are WAY TO TRIM! You need to be chauffered, or carried on a bamboo throne by obesely large amazonesque women, so you expend less energy in order to build a more credible paunch!! Remember, as a good chef is always fat (look at emeril, Batali, paula dean etc., screw cat cora and all those top chef judges who suck!!)—so too must a reliable food critic!

  • Bloggers are supposed to be dorky and hide behind their keyboard. Nice clip!

  • I don’t see a fat man. I see a damn fool!

  • The voice coming out of the Zach carbon blob was two octaves higher than I was expecting

  • ZB knows his stuff , major props BUT

Zach looks like a goddamn war correspondent (what’s with that military green jacket???) who’s had one too many stressful overseas deployments that’s led the majority of his hair to seek safety in the drain pipes with their other brethren ….

    umm, sorry bro

  • I think Zach looks very LA! He clearly looks like a combo of like 10 different actors, plus he’s scrawny! I like the green army coat! And if he had a thick head of hair, it would just look wrong!

Hey, when did this degenerate into Luncher of the Week—oh wait—-sorry….

  • 1) it’s called a sweatshirt, not a sweater.
    2) I find this cart no better than 20 other chicken/lamb carts in the area. any qualitative or quantitative distinctions MLs can find?

  • Ha!! I finally got to see what Zach looks like. Something that I have wondered about since I started reading this blog. Zach seems to have kept his picture out of everything in the past but he finally slipped up and let us see what he actually looks like.

    Harvey

  • this is fantastic! Everything is green, green shirt green eyes. Zach, you aren’t even borderline fat. Especially enjoyed the last 5 seconds. Be honest– how many times did you watch this yourself?

  • That Cart has fallen off. The chicken is cardboard.

  • Dude, you are Tom Cruise compared to the dork that hosts this show… please!

  • If you think the 53rd and 6th Halal Guys are good, you haven’t tried Sammy’s Halal out on the corner of 73rd and Broadway in Jackson Heights, Queens. Sammy’s won the 2006 Vendy Award for best street cart in NYC. This cart in Jackson Heights is the original, but supposedly there are at least a handful of other carts opened by the owner, Samiul Haque Noor.

I find the rice to be just as fluffy, but it has a certain flavor to it that I can’t pinpoint. The Halal Guys’ rice is fluffy, but that’s it. Also, Sammy’s chicken is cooked with lots of cilantro, which adds a nice zing to it. Finally, they have a secret weapon in their “green sauce”. Yes, Sammy’s also has white sauce and hot sauce, but their green sauce is nothing I’ve ever experienced at any other halal stand. It’s tastes like a perfect blend of white sauce and spiciness, without going overboard.

  • This reminds me of the Seinfeld episode where Estelle Costanza found out the woman giving her marital advice wasn’t Chinese. If Zach isn’t fat, I’m not eating what he says I should.
