Breaking: Volstead Postpones Free Lunch because of Water Shutdown
Just got this from the Volstead (on 54th btw. Park+Lex), the restaurant which has been giving away free lunches to Midtown Lunch readers every Tuesday this month:
Wanted to give you a heads up that we have to postpone today’s free lunch for two weeks. The water department has shut down the water for the entire block and a few blocks of Lexington! Since we can’t get a straight answer as to when it will be turned back on, and we’re completely booked for next week we will honor all of today’s reservations in two weeks, Tuesday June 3rd. We’re trying to contact as many people as humanly possible that have reservations today.
This probably has something to do with yesterdays water main break on 57th btw. 5+6th, although strangely enough, it’s business as usual at most of the restaurants in the vicinity- including the Cosi (on 56th btw. Mad+Park), La Strada (on 56th btw. Lex+Park), Fika Espresso Bar (58th btw. 5+6th), Tina’s Restaurant (56th btw. 5+6th) & the Burger Joint (56th btw. 6+7th).

i tried to be the first one to call this morning, but they were already all booked up for next week…i thought if we wanted a reservation, we were supposed to call one week in advance…where’d all these people come from?

Doug – they open up reservations on Monday for the following Tuesday lunch. I got screwed last Tuesday when I called first thing in the morning and they gave me the heads up to call on Monday. This one week in advance thing is a little confusing since its actually more than 1 week in advance.

Turns out it was actually cheaper to blow up their own water main than to continue feeding free lunches to ML’ers.
A can see that stretch of road from my building. It was completely closed off and marked up with fluorescent spray paint around 8am….Water company, DEP, and a couple of other contractors were on-site. Now have the road coned off, letting a single lane of traffic through.
