This is nowhere near midtown, but for the Astoria comments I’ve seen around here – bZ grill has the best gyros, hands down :) (I’ve been to the mentioned Opa, and Uncle George’s, as well as some others)

Instead of the mysterious blob you get everywhere else, their spit is full of actual slices of meat. A humongous stack of fresh pork or chicken!

My mouth is watering just recalling it — how I wish they’d open a store in midtown :/

Hmmm im also looking for a good Greek restaurant in Miami. And that “white sauce” sounds like something that put in a Donair sandwich rap, or at lease thats how we did it up in Canada.

I really like the gyro at Z Deli, on 8th Ave. between 48th and 49th street, though I haven’t been there in a long time.

I’ve never had the gyro at Gyro II, but it’s one of the best tossed salad deals in the area…! Five add-ins (two can be meat), some free choices, and a roll for just under $7 is a pretty good deal compared to a lot of other salad toss places.

There’s a place called “Intermission Deli” on 8th Ave. b/t 35th and 36th that actually has a pretty good gyro. It used to be friggin huge, the portion is smaller now but still very filling, and worth a shot if you’re looking for something with a bit omre of a traditional style than street meat.

Sorry to do this to you… Olympia’s Kabob House and Taverna in St. Louis, MO was rated the best greek restaurant in town and they have an awesome Gyro that sounds exactly like what you are looking for. Just had one for lunch and I’m stuffed! I’ve been craving that for awhile now. Good luck in your search. Thankfully, I’ve found mine.

Has anyone tried the fairly new “greek gyro” spot in the concourse level of Penn Station? It’s on the level where the LIRR train platforms are between the stairs for the subway and Au Bon Pain. Might be the only Greek gyro in Midtown ( if you consider Penn Station’s food within the boundaries).
They share a store front with the burger and fresh fries place.

Don’t tell DocChuck I told you all this, but his credentials consist of a certificate from a cooking class he once took on making mac n cheese in the blue box; his breeding is classic west virginian if you know what I mean, and his wealth consists of some old bus tokens he found in a couch someone left by the curb for the garbage collectors.
