[...] The last time I ate a salad was at Variety Cafe, in June of 2006, and I bragged about how I ”fat guy’d” it up by adding cheese, fried chicken and those fried chinese noodle thingys to it. Once Variety Cafe was closed by the DOH, that was the end of my salad eating days… until yesterday. [...]

[...] In the far reaches of Midtown, there exists a magical place whose enormity, and depth of choice, is only eclipsed by its price. A wonderland of lunches, that makes Dishes or Variety Cafe look like a sandbox inside Disney World. Where prepared meals circle ethnic food stations, and pre-packaged sushi is turned out fresh by the minute. If only it wasn’t hampered by the anti-fat man, pay the lb. price structure, it could possibly be the Midtown equivalent of Willy Wonka’s Chocoate Factory.
[...] It takes alot for me to eat at a Midtown Deli. There are so many of them, and they offer so little. They breed laziness in every Midtown worker- and if they weren’t right outside your office, you would never eat there. Just admit it. But, every once in awhile, one of these delis offers something extraordinary… something that sets it apart. Variety Cafe, with their fat guy salad bar (I stopped eating there after it was closed by the health dept.), Cafe Duke and their Korean food station, or the one location of Europa Cafe with a make your own burrito bar.
Bistro 49, 49th St between Park and Madison. A salad with *unlimited* toppings for $6.99. They usually have 2-3 kinds of chicken, bacon, turkey, ham, avocado, grape leaves, 4-5 kinds of cheese (incl. mozzarella balls), etc. And they are generous. Lots of other good food there too: bento boxes, udon, sushi, salad bar, sandwiches, etc.

[...] Variety Cafe. 48th btw. 5+6th. Closed in July for scoring a 95. Their follow up inspection scored them a near perfect 2. Since then they’ve slipped back up to a 20. I think I’ll stick with my new favorite Cafe Duke. They’ve got a 14 (sure it might have been a 39 in January… but beggars can’t be choosers) [...]

[...] Is there anything that shows the resilience of Midtown eaters more then Variety Cafe… re-opened and a line at the Salad Bar (9 days after being closed by the Health Department… ahem, I mean “closed due to improve our service“). Either that, or we’re a sad bunch that refuses to venture more then a block for good food during lunch.
I actually planned to try Variety today, and was one of the confused throng.

Another salad alternative, on the same block, is City Market Cafe. 7.53 (includes tax) for unlimited -- at least they've never cut me off -- toppings. Seems as fresh as anywhere else, though I'm not much of a carnivore, so I can't vouch for the meat. I had the shrimp once during a mad protein craving, however, and it seemed fine.
