Flatiron News: Mad. Sq. Eats, Hester Nights and Go!Go! Curry Open

Here’s a bit of Flatiron Lunch news before we lay this week’s review on you…

Happy First Day of Mad. Sq. Eats Spring 2013! Starting today, the yellow tape in the above photo will come down, the vendors will roll up their tent panels, and we will all descend on Worth Square at the corner of 5th Avenue and Broadway from 24th to 25th. If you need a reminder of how this went down in the past, please visit these hunger-inducing posts: here, here, and here.

As usual, there are a few new-comers to join favorites like Calexico, Cannibal, Ilili, and Roberta’s. Of the newbies, I interested in trying Mrs. Dorsey’s Kitchen, Mason Jar NYC (Mason Jar NYC is in the Flatiron area, but barely has a salad under $10, so it will be interesting what food and prices they bring to Mad. Sq. Eats), and Seoul Lee Korean Bar B Cue.

Last night marked the opening of Hester Nights, and I stopped by to see how it was going. Of note: there was a line to acquire beers just inside the Eventi at Brighton, but otherwise, the crowds weren’t crazy, and I noticed 1-2 empty tents, so I think it will pick up in the coming weeks. Make sure you attend with a friend or two so you can share and try more dishes. Fat Mac didn’t have a line last night, but I thought they offered a hefty portion of classic mac ‘n cheese for $6. Same for Ludlow Pizza which offers $5 margarita or $6 sopressata small personal pizzas. I am most excited for the tremendous variety, because you also have thai street food, bahn mis, BBQ, Mexican, Japanese griddle cakes, and many desserts. As the popular saying goes: “Variety is the spice of life.”

Last week, the readers reminded me that Tebaya on 19th Street closed to be replaced by Go!Go! Curry. Go!Go! Curry uptown has generated a lot of ML press with promotions and offers. I hope they do the same for us. But in the meantime, I am most interested in the fact that on a random block in the Flatiron district, we have Go!Go! Curry within 2 storefronts of Go-Go Thai. What are the chances? Maybe Dim Sum Go Go from Chinatown can open a branch on this block, and we could have a Go Go trifecta!!

i went looking for tebaya after they closed shop because google says they are around washington square park now. so i went with my friend and couldnt find it. i took him to the go go curry around there instead and ate at the park. as we were eating i noticed the postcard included stating the new go go curry opening and realized the address was the same one as tebaya’s original spot. my friend could not stop laughing at me. he asked could i still love a restaurant that killed off a restaurant that i loved more?

I haven’t tried the madison square eats location obviously, but I have ordered delivery from Mason Jar.

It was completely inedible. Dry, nasty, horrifying food. Unfit to eat. I threw it out after taking a single bite.

This was 2-3 months back, so maybe they improved. But I’ll let someone else take one for the team.

To clarify, I’m not talking “foodie” unfit to eat, like I expect artisanal cheeses, foie gras, and bread hand shaped by a frenchman. It wasn’t like that, this isn’t an elitist detracting a star from Il Buco Alimentari because they didn’t refill my Pellegrino fast enough. I didn’t expect to get real BBQ, but I literally could not eat this food. I was (and am) pretty pissed off about it.

Your grandmother living in Florida used to 3PM geriatric specials probably doesn’t have a great palate. Mine certainly doesn’t. I assure you that she would not eat that swill. It was that bad. Torturously bad. Worse than any late-night rotten-smelling chinese-mexican fresh tortilla taco.

    • Of course you haven’t tried the MSE location because they’re new there and it starts today.

I tried a couple of the new places and thought the Sunday Gravy Parm from Sunday Gravy was delicious, though not very filling for $9. The reality of the matter is most places at Mad Square Eats won’t fill you up for under $10 though.

I also got the tacos at Seoul Lee Korean BBQ so I could try each of their meats. They didn’t have a menu which was confusing. I thought all were very solid. The meats were all equally flavorful, and the pickled veggies were good, though the tacos were a little dry and could have benefited from some sort of sauce.
